DoorDash Quarterly Taxes: How Much Dashers Pay and When
Updated 2026-10-18 · Not tax advice
Short answer
DoorDash doesn't withhold taxes, so most Dashers who expect to owe $1,000 or more for the year pay estimated tax four times a year. You owe 15.3% self-employment tax on 92.35% of your net profit (earnings minus mileage and other expenses), plus income tax. In the example below, a full-time Dasher with $52,000 of earnings owes about $5,416 for the year: setting aside $1,354 a quarter covers it in full, and the minimum to avoid a penalty is about $1,219 a quarter. The remaining 2026 payment is due January 15, 2027.
Figures used: Figures are from 2026 IRS sources: the 2026 Form 1040-ES (standard deduction $16,100 single, tax rate schedules, $184,500 Social Security wage base), IRS standard mileage rates (72.5 cents a mile January to June 2026, 76 cents July to December) and IRS guidance on the qualified tips deduction. The IRS has not published 2027 brackets, standard deductions or mileage rates yet (the 2027 Social Security wage base, $192,300, was announced on October 14, 2026).

DoorDash treats Dashers as independent contractors, so nothing is withheld from your pay (DoorDash Dasher tax guide). The IRS expects you to pay as you go, with quarterly estimated tax payments on Form 1040-ES. Here is how to work out the amount.
What Dashers owe tax on
- Self-employment tax. Social Security and Medicare for the self-employed: 15.3% of 92.35% of your net profit, which is about 14.1% of profit (IRS Topic 554). It applies from the first dollar once net earnings reach $400.
- Federal income tax. On your profit plus any other income, after the deductible half of self-employment tax, your standard deduction, the qualified business income deduction and, if they apply, the new tips deduction.
- State income tax, if your state has one.
Net profit is your DoorDash earnings (base pay, Peak Pay and customer tips) minus business expenses. It is what you report on Schedule C, and it drives everything else.
The deductions that matter most for Dashers
| Deduction | How it works | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Mileage | Business miles × 72.5 cents (Jan to Jun 2026) or 76 cents (Jul to Dec 2026), plus parking and tolls | Schedule C line 9 |
| Phone | The business-use share of your phone bill | Schedule C line 25 or 27b |
| Insulated bags and gear | Hot bags, phone mounts, chargers | Schedule C line 22 |
| Qualified tips | Up to $25,000 of tips, limited to your net Dasher profit. Reduces income tax only | Schedule 1-A |
Mileage needs a log. DoorDash emails a mileage estimate by January 31 based on on-delivery miles. A log you keep yourself, with date, purpose and miles for each shift, is the record the IRS expects (Pub. 463). Not every mile counts: unless your home is your principal place of business (a qualifying home office), the drive from home to your first pickup and from your last drop-off back home is generally nondeductible commuting. Log the miles between those points. The standard mileage rate replaces gas, insurance, repairs and depreciation for that car, so don’t deduct those too (IRS standard mileage rates).
The tips deduction is new for 2025 to 2028. App and platform-based delivery workers are listed under goods delivery people (code 804) on the IRS list of tipped occupations. The deduction is capped at $25,000, can’t exceed your net profit from the business where you earned the tips, and phases out above $150,000 of modified AGI ($300,000 joint). You need a valid Social Security number, and married couples must file jointly (IRS). Tips are still subject to self-employment tax (IRS tip reporting).
Worked example: a full-time Dasher, 2026
Fictional numbers. Sam is single, under 65 and not blind, Dashes full time with no other job or income, has no dependents, credits or adjustments other than half of self-employment tax, takes the standard deduction and uses the standard mileage rate. The 22,000 miles are deductible business miles, after leaving out commuting.
| Step | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| DoorDash earnings | Base pay and Peak Pay $42,000 + tips $10,000 | $52,000 |
| Mileage | 11,000 miles × $0.725 (Jan to Jun) + 11,000 miles × $0.76 (Jul to Dec) | $16,335 |
| Other expenses | Phone business share $480, bags and gear $120, parking and tolls $265 | $865 |
| Net profit | $52,000 − $16,335 − $865 | $34,800 |
| Self-employment tax | $34,800 × 92.35% × 15.3% | $4,917 |
| AGI | $34,800 − half of SE tax ($2,459) | $32,341 |
| Taxable income before QBI | $32,341 − $16,100 standard deduction − $10,000 tips deduction | $6,241 |
| QBI deduction | Smaller of 20% × $22,341 (profit minus half of SE tax minus the $10,000 of deducted tips) or 20% × $6,241 | $1,248 |
| Taxable income | $6,241 − $1,248 | $4,993 |
| Income tax | 10% × $4,993 | $499 |
| Total federal tax | $4,917 + $499 | $5,416 |
| Set aside per quarter (full tax) | $5,416 ÷ 4 | $1,354 |
| Minimum per quarter to avoid a penalty | 90% × $5,416 = $4,874, ÷ 4 | $1,219 |
That is about 10% of gross earnings or 16% of net profit. Two things stand out:
- Mileage is the biggest lever. It cut Sam’s profit by almost a third. Every 1,000 untracked miles at 76 cents costs about $107 in self-employment tax alone.
- The tips deduction saved income tax, not SE tax. Without it, Sam’s income tax would be about $1,311 instead of $499. Self-employment tax stays $4,917 either way.
The $1,354 set-aside pays the whole bill, so nothing is left in April. The required minimum is smaller: 90% of this year’s tax, about $1,219 a quarter, or 100% of Sam’s 2025 tax if that is lower and Sam filed a 2025 return covering all 12 months (110% if 2025 AGI was over $150,000; see the safe-harbor rule). With no full-year 2025 return, the 90% figure is the minimum. Paying only the minimum leaves the rest due in April. State tax is extra. Want the official line-by-line method? Track miles and quarterly payments in one kit
The Schedule C ledger has a mileage log that applies the IRS rate for each trip date, a platform fees category and a running profit. The quarterly calculator turns that profit into each 1040-ES payment, with a W-2 withholding input if you also have a job. Built and tested in Excel. Its Google Sheets copy link is included as a preview: that edition hasn’t passed our release checks yet (cover and chart visuals, and the newer Start here tab). One-time price. The calculator has no separate tips-deduction field, so its income tax estimate errs on the high side for tipped Dashers.

Your 1099 from DoorDash
DoorDash sends a 1099-NEC, available in the Dasher app by January 31. For payments made in 2026, payers generally have to send one once they pay you $2,000 or more; before 2026 the threshold was $600 (IRS). Starting with 2026, the 1099-NEC also has a box for tips. All your earnings are taxable whether or not you get a form, so keep your own monthly totals from the Dasher app.
A simple quarterly routine

FAQ
Do I have to pay quarterly taxes on DoorDash?
Generally yes, if you expect to owe at least $1,000 in federal tax for the year after withholding and refundable credits (IRS Form 1040-ES). If you also have a W-2 job, extra withholding there can cover your Dasher tax instead of quarterly payments.
How much should I set aside from DoorDash pay?
Self-employment tax alone is about 14.1% of net profit. Add income tax, which depends on your other income and deductions. In the example on this page it comes to about 10% of gross earnings, or 16% of net profit, for a single Dasher with no other job. Higher earners, people with a W-2 job and people in states with income tax need more.
Can I deduct mileage and gas?
Pick one method per car. With the standard mileage rate (72.5 cents a mile for January to June 2026, 76 cents for July to December) you deduct business miles times the rate, plus parking and tolls, but not gas, insurance or repairs. The actual expense method deducts the business share of those costs instead.
Are DoorDash tips tax-free now?
Partly. App-based delivery workers are on the IRS list of tipped occupations, so qualified tips can be deducted from income tax, up to $25,000 and no more than your net Dasher profit. Tips are still business income for self-employment tax, so you still owe 15.3% on them.
Will I get a 1099 from DoorDash?
DoorDash sends a 1099-NEC to Dashers it pays above the IRS reporting threshold. For payments made in 2026 that threshold is $2,000, up from $600. You owe tax on all your earnings whether or not a 1099 arrives.
